16 July
2008 - World Youth Day BBQ
You have
2,240 sausages, layer upon layer of frozen onions and ninety minutes to
prepare sufficient sausage sandwiches to satisfy the hunger of eight
hundred very active young adults.
And, by the way, the 800 will arrive as one at 12 noon and have to be
at Chatswood Station just after 1pm to catch the trains into the City
for their afternoon program. What will you do?
Well, in all Sydney, the WYD organisers called on Rotary.
Comprehensive details of this marathon Chatswood Cook-Off may be found
in the Rotary Club
of Chatswood's weekly bulletin The
Right Wheel Vol 61 No 4 available by clicking

| What
is Rotary?
Rotary
is an international organisation, mainly comprising business and
professional
people, who encourage and foster service to the community.
It operates
as a club with weekly meetings (generally with a guest speaker) where
business,
community or service is discussed in a social environment.
It places
particular
emphasis on high ethical standards in business and the professions, the
application of service and the advancement of international
understanding,
goodwill and peace.

How
Do We Serve the Community?
We
promote the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including
faithfulness,
fidelity and fair treatment. We encourage recognition of the worthiness
to society of all useful occupations and we recognise the contribution
of vocational talents to the needs of the world.
We
have a broad range of programmes and projects in areas such as
community
and human development, help for the disadvantaged and environmental
protection.
These contribute to education, health, facilities, childcare, crime
prevention,
the elderly, immigrant assimilation, literacy and others.
We
are involved in larger scale overseas projects where we contribute
personnel
and funds to advance international understanding through contact whilst
contributing to another country’s community issues.
We
contribute to the welfare and well-being of the young people in the
Chatswood
area and provide elements for school children and young adults to help
develop their leadership and work skills.

How
Do We Raise The Money for All This?
By
far the largest source of funds for our many projects is commercial
sponsorship.
During the 60 years of our existence, some of the local businesses
have been very generous and contributed large sums of money over time.
Some are international or national corporations with offices and many
employees
in the Chatswood area, but some are local businesses that see their
contributions
as an indicator of their involvement in the community. We also raise
money
from the public and our members via fund-raising events and a
fortnightly
barbecue in the Victoria Avenue shopping area.

Benefits
of being a Benefactor
- As
Rotary is an organisation comprising business and professional people
we
network in the business community and make our business associates well
aware of those who support us.
- We
will create awareness for your brand names in any way we can.
- You
can improve your image, as you will be seen to be contributing to the
Chatswood
community and being a good corporate citizen.
- Employees will appreciate your generosity and give you
greater loyalty.
- Many
projects can give you direct involvement that can be used for customer
and staff relations.
- Donations
are usually tax deductible.

Do
We Need More Benefactors?
The
answer is “Always!” The major restriction on our service to the
Willoughby
and International community is the lack of funds. We can do much more
if
we are given the extra resources.
We
are a voluntary organisation with no other source of funding than that
which our members, the public and our benefactors provide. Every year
we
find it necessary to canvas business for ongoing support.
Please
help us to help others
