WYD2008 logo16 July 2008 - World Youth Day BBQ

You have 2,240 sausages, layer upon layer of frozen onions and ninety minutes to prepare sufficient sausage sandwiches to satisfy the hunger of eight hundred very active young adults.
And, by the way, the 800 will arrive as one at 12 noon and have to be at Chatswood Station just after 1pm to catch the trains into the City for their afternoon program. What will you do?
Well, in all Sydney, the WYD organisers called on Rotary.

Comprehensive details of this marathon Chatswood Cook-Off may be found in the Rotary Club of Chatswood's weekly bulletin The Right Wheel Vol 61 No 4 available by clicking here

What is Rotary?

Rotary is an international organisation, mainly comprising business and professional people, who encourage and foster service to the community.

It operates as a club with weekly meetings (generally with a guest speaker) where business, community or service is discussed in a social environment.

It places particular emphasis on high ethical standards in business and the professions, the application of service and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace.

How Do We Serve the Community?

We promote the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including faithfulness, fidelity and fair treatment. We encourage recognition of the worthiness to society of all useful occupations and we recognise the contribution of vocational talents to the needs of the world.

We have a broad range of programmes and projects in areas such as community and human development, help for the disadvantaged and environmental protection. These contribute to education, health, facilities, childcare, crime prevention, the elderly, immigrant assimilation, literacy and others.

We are involved in larger scale overseas projects where we contribute personnel and funds to advance international understanding through contact whilst contributing to another country’s community issues.

We contribute to the welfare and well-being of the young people in the Chatswood area and provide elements for school children and young adults to help develop their leadership and work skills.

What Are We Doing?

We are implementing several exciting projects in the 2008-09 Rotary Year,
including as a small sample:
  • Supporting the Willoughby City Council's Men's Shed project
  • Supported World Youth Day 2008 activities in the Chatswood area
  • Recognising dedication and quiet achievers in our community with the Community Service Awards
  • Supporting students from local schools at a variety of educational and youth leadership programmes
  • Pride of Workmanship Awards, Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Awards
  • Funding "Shelter Boxes" to provide urgent aid to regions affected by life-threatening disasters, both natural and man-made including the Burma cyclone
  • Supporting education and projects to supply clean water in overseas countries
  • Participate in Rotary's Group Study Exchange (GSE) programme, providing a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women.

How Do We Raise The Money for All This?

By far the largest source of funds for our many projects is commercial sponsorship. During the 60 years of our existence, some of the local businesses have been very generous and contributed large sums of money over time. Some are international or national corporations with offices and many employees in the Chatswood area, but some are local businesses that see their contributions as an indicator of their involvement in the community. We also raise money from the public and our members via fund-raising events and a fortnightly barbecue in the Victoria Avenue shopping area.

What Are Our Achievements?

We have been in existence for 60 years and some of our major achievements include:

  • Construction of The Rotary Athletic Field in Mowbray Rd., Lane Cove and additional facilities including amenities block, grandstand.
  • Construction of a nature boardwalk and canoe launching facilities adjacent to the Rotary Athletic Field in 2005 to celebrate the Centenary of the foundation of Rotary.
  • Running the "Tree of Joy" for over 20 years to provide Christmas gifts for the needy in nursing homes, hospitals, and the outback. Detailed coverage for 2006 and 2007 is provided.
  • Provision of Christmas hampers to drought affected areas of NSW.
  • Charity Golf Days and Auctions in conjunction with the Chatswood Chamber of Commerce to raise money for Lifeline - Harbour to Hawkesbury.
In each of 2006 and 2007 we have raised
over $10,000 for Lifeline - Harbour to Hawkesbury.
  • Supported local music students with the Gordon Waterhouse Music Award on 19 March 2008.
  • Provision of facilities at the O.H. Reid Reserve, Castle Cove.
  • Presentation of Police Officer of the Year awards.
  • Re-establishment of the bushland in the Flatrock Creek precinct.
  • Contribution towards the worldwide eradication of polio.
  • Provision and maintenance of a Treasure Chest of toys at Royal North Shore Hospital for children undergoing particularly stressful medical procedures.
  • Assisting in malaria prevention in the Pacific Islands area.
  • Installation of water supply systems for villages in developing countries
  • Donations to The Children’s Cancer Institute Australia, The Autistic Children’s Association, The Royal North Shore Hospital, Motor Neurone Disease Association of New South Wales, bushfire victims and many others.
  • A multitude of youth projects including suicide prevention, leadership training and exchange students.
  • Presentation of awards to those who show excellence in their professions and those who have been outstanding in their service to the community.
  • Hands-on support of community facilities including painting and maintenance of buildings for charitable organisations.

Benefits of being a Benefactor

  • As Rotary is an organisation comprising business and professional people we network in the business community and make our business associates well aware of those who support us.
  • We will create awareness for your brand names in any way we can.
  • You can improve your image, as you will be seen to be contributing to the Chatswood community and being a good corporate citizen.
  • Employees will appreciate your generosity and give you greater loyalty.
  • Many projects can give you direct involvement that can be used for customer and staff relations.
  • Donations are usually tax deductible.

Do We Need More Benefactors?

The answer is “Always!” The major restriction on our service to the Willoughby and International community is the lack of funds. We can do much more if we are given the extra resources.

We are a voluntary organisation with no other source of funding than that which our members, the public and our benefactors provide. Every year we find it necessary to canvas business for ongoing support.
