Shelterbox

Shelterbox is the brain child of Tom Henderson from the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard (Cornwall UK). Shelterbox was launched in April 2000 and the first consignment of 143 boxes was sent to earthquake victims in the Indian state of Gujarat in January 2001. Since then shelterboxes have been delivered on every continent in response to earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, typhoons, hurricanes, volcanoes and conflicts including bushfire ravaged areas of Victoria, Australia.

For information about recent deployments we invite you to visit our webpage.

A Shelterbox consists of a durable dome tent, thermal blankets and other equipment. It provides dry shelter, a warm bed, light and heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools for up to 10 people. Every box also contains a smile in the form of a children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens.

Shelterbox aims to bring shelter and bedding to people around the world who have become homeless through natural disasters to help restore dignity and provide a sense of security and community.

To date The Rotary Club of Chatswood has donated a total of approximately 40 Shelterboxes.

At a recent function Tom Henderson said, "Shelterbox is approaching its 10th anniversary and in that time we have provided temporary accommodation for over 1,000,000 people. Without Rotary, this would not have been possible".
