National Youth Science Forum

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a two week residential programme for outstanding science students from throughout Australia at the beginning of Year 12 of their education. Its aim is to create awareness of the wide range of science subjects available, offer the opportunity to gain an insight into university life and introduce them to research and researchers.

It is held in Canberra during January.

"These were two of the best weeks of my life so far. NYSF is called a Science forum for a reason. When the science started, we hit the ground running. I was in the Earth and Planetary Science Group. We went to Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking Station, Geoscience Australia, Earth and Marine Sciences, Research School of Earth Sciences ANU, a fossil dig in Cowra, a practical look at Freshwater Ecology, and a field trip to see the effects of salinity around the Cowra Region. We saw what Australia’s leading scientists are studying but we also met and talked with them. We gained an insight into how dedicated, inspirational and approachable they are about their work." - Patrick

If you are presently in Year 11, a permanent resident of Australia, and are considering tertiary studies in science, engineering or related areas at an Australian university then you are eligible to apply. Applications should include academic reports and a statement from the school Science Teacher/Principal.

Selection is by means of an interview conducted by a Rotary District 9680 panel.

Applications will open in 2011 and more information will be available at that time

The National Youth Science Forum certainly extends and expands each participant's view of opportunities in the world of Science. Patrick, after attending NYSF, realised he could combine his love of the sea and his belief in community service with his pursuit of a career in science. He joined the Royal Australian Navy. Now he is studying for his Bachelor of Science degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy. But not before the Navy sent him off for six months at sea on the HMAS Mermaid and for six months of duty at Jervis Bay/Watson’s Bay. Patrick is excited about living a life of Service through Science - Rotarian Noel Cislowski
